The Shahara Bridge

Shahara Bridge is one of the greatest historical engineering feats in Yemen


this bridge was built in the 16th century and served the purpose of connecting the village of Shahara to that of Shaharat Al-Fays across a gorge of 300 meters deep, so people could at that time move easily from town to another. A rumor was common that the bridge was built to fight the Turkish invaders, in connection with legend that the bridge could be removed when danger loomed, but recognized sources did not mention anything of that. It designed and built by Salah Al-Yemen at the orders of Al-Asta Saleh Al-Suaidi, its construction cost more than a 100,000 silver rials.

                          


the bridge is used by the locals on a daily basis, and is widely regarded an architectural masterpiece. It also attracts visitors from around the world, but the area is inhospitable and not easily accessible. Shaharah and Shaharat Al-Fays are only accessible by car, which must either be personally owned or a rental. Safety measures do no allow visitors to take a taxi, unless accompanied by an official tour guide.

Instead it was a harbinger of a fashion apocalypse. Wooden face barricades, toxic waste jumpsuits, and strapless dresses worn by dour male pixies. Ladies, meet your new stylish man. Thermonuclear Weapon

thermonuclear weapon is a nuclear weapon design that uses the heat generated by a fission bomb to compress a nuclear fusion stage which indirectly results in greatly increased energy yield (i.e., bomb "power"). It is colloquially referred to as ahydrogen bomb or H-bomb because it employs hydrogen fusion, though in most applications the majority of its destructive energy comes from uranium fission, not hydrogen fusion by itself. The fusion stage in such weapons is required to efficiently cause the large quantities of fission characteristic of most thermonuclear weapons.[1]
The concept of the thermonuclear weapon was first developed and used by the United States and has since been used in most of the world's nuclear weapons.[2] The modern design of all thermonuclear weapons in the United States is known as the Teller-Ulam design for its two chief contributors, Edward Teller and Stanisław Ulam, who developed it in 1951 for the U.S., with certain concepts developed with the contribution of John von Neumann. The first test of this principle was the "Ivy Mikenuclear test in 1952, conducted by the United States. In the Soviet Union, the design was independently developed and known as Andrei Sakharov's "Third Idea", first tested in 1955. Similar devices were developed by the United Kingdom, China, and France, though no specific code names are known for their designs.
As thermonuclear weapons represent the most efficient design for weapon energy yield in weapons with yields above 50 kilotons, today virtually all the nuclear weapons deployed by the five nuclear-weapon states under the NPT are thermonuclear weapons using the Teller–Ulam design.[3]
The essential features of the mature thermonuclear weapon design, which officially remained secret for nearly three decades, are: 1) separation of stages into a triggering "primary" explosive and a much more powerful "secondary" explosive, 2) compression of the secondary by X-rays coming from nuclear fission in the primary, a process called the "radiation implosion" of the secondary, and 3) heating of the secondary, after cold compression, by a second fission explosion inside the secondary.
The radiation implosion mechanism is a heat engine exploiting the temperature difference between the secondary's hot, surrounding radiation channel and its relatively cool interior. This temperature difference is briefly maintained by a massive heat barrier called the "pusher", which also serves as an implosion tamper, increasing and prolonging the compression of the secondary. If made of uranium—and it usually is—it can capture neutrons produced by the fusion reaction and undergo fission itself, increasing the overall explosive yield. In many Teller–Ulam weapons, fission of the pusher dominates the explosion and produces radioactive fission product fallout.




Disadvantages Of Viagra


Since its introduction in 1998, Viagra has been a boon to millions of men. There have been many positive reports on improvement in sexual health and well-being. Viagra has enough drawbacks, however, that many people fail to use it successfully, discontinue the drug after a single use, or are deterred by serious side effects.

Because Viagra can be so effective at improving sexual performance, couples often look to it as a solution to their relationship problems. Viagra is a remedy for only the physical aspects of impotence, however. Contrary to expectations, it cannot increase a low sex drive, help a person learn better interpersonal skills, or improve deficits in sexual know-how.

 

Dependency and Detachment

The regular use of Viagra by men who are usually not impotent can lead to a psychological dependency. Such individuals may find themselves unable to function sexually without using the drug. Furthermore, since Viagra brings on a relatively quick and effortless reaction to sexual stimulation, a man may be unable to take the time to connect with his emotional experiences or those of his partner. As a result, Viagra users may feel numb or detached during their sexual experiences.

 

Side Effects

Viagra affects blood cells and bloods vessels in the head, skin, causing annoying side effects such as headaches, flushed skin and indigestion. The more problematic side effects of the drug, which includes dizziness, hearing loss and visual effects such as blurred vision, means that the timing and necessity of driving a car or operating other machinery must be carefully considered when using Viagra. The higher the dosages of the medication, the more likely that side effects will occur.

 

Drug Interactions

Men who need Viagra often have other medical issues and there is a potential for dangerous interactions between the Viagra and their prescription medications . Combining Viagra with such medications can increase unwanted effects and hamper the activity of the medications. Drugs such as nitroglycerin used to treat heart conditions, the alpha-blockers used for prostate problems, the HIV protease inhibitors, or the street drugs known as "poppers" can lead to cardiovascular problems when combined with Viagra.

 

Risk Factors

Men with risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes must exercise caution when using the drug. This is because Viagra works by causing the arteries to expand in order to encourage increased blood flow to the penis. This, in turn, affects the blood pressure and can possibly contribute to the development of an abnormal heart rate, a stroke or a heart attack, all of which can lead to sudden death.

Cholesterol, from the Greek chole- (bile) and stereos (solid) followed by the chemical suffix -ol for an alcohol, is an organic chemical substance classified as a waxy steroid of fat. It is an essential structural component of mammalian cell membranes and is required to establish proper membrane permeability and fluidity.
In addition to its importance within cells, cholesterol also serves as a precursor for the biosynthesis of steroid hormonesbile acids, and vitamin D.[2] Cholesterol is the principal sterol synthesized by animals; in vertebrates it is formed predominantly in the liver. Small quantities are synthesized in other cellular organisms (eukaryotes) such as plants and fungi. It is almost completely absent amongprokaryotes (i.e., bacteria).
Although cholesterol is important and necessary for human health, high levels of cholesterol in the blood have been linked to damage to arteries and cardiovascular disease.[3]

Immune-system test may predict early death


June 4th,2012 (health.com) A blood test that measures a marker of immune-system activity may help doctors identify people who are at risk of dying at an early age, a new study suggests.
Researchers at the Mayo Clinic measured levels of the immune-system molecules known as free light chains in 15,859 Minnesotans age 50 and up, and found that people whose levels were in the top 10% were four times more likely than the other study participants to die over the next 13 years.
Doctors commonly test for free light chains to diagnose and manage blood disorders and blood-related cancers, such as multiple myeloma or lymphoma. This study, which was published this week in the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings, is the first to link high levels of free light chains with earlier death in a group of people without any known blood disorders.

Normally, light chains bind with so-called heavy chains to form infection-fighting antibodies. The presence of unattached "free" light chains has long been recognized as a signal that the immune system has gone awry, either due to inflammation, infection, or both, says lead author Vincent Rajkumar, M.D., a hematologist at the Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, Minnesota.

Elevated free light chain levels have been observed in people with kidney dysfunction, and are also seen in autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. Even after the researchers took into account the kidney function, age and gender of the participants, however, those with the highest free light chain levels were still twice as likely as their peers to die during the study.
Free light chain levels appeared to be equally effective at predicting death from many different causes, including cancer, heart disease, lung disease and diabetes.
It's not clear from the findings why, exactly, free light chains are linked to a higher risk of early death. High levels could be a marker of inflammation, which is associated with heart disease and numerous other health problems. But it's also possible they're a sign of normal, age-related deterioration of the immune system, the study notes.

And it's still unclear how this test might be useful in generally healthy people. For now, Rajkumar and his colleagues urge doctors not to use the test as a screening instrument, as that will simply serve to alarm patients.
On the other hand, Rajkumar says, if doctors order the test for a specific reason and it comes back high, they may want to use that information to test for additional problems that could then be treated.
"It might be telling you something you might be missing," he says.
Dr. Neil Blumberg, a professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center, in Rochester, New York, says he's skeptical that free light chain tests are more powerful than existing tests that measure immune-system function or markers of inflammation, such as C-reactive protein.

The study authors didn't compare the free light chain test with these other tests, Blumberg points out, and it "may not measure anything that we don't get with white cell count or C-reactive protein or 15 other tests which are cheaper and easier to do."
Besides, Blumberg says, if a person's test results were to come back sky-high, the advice for preventing an early death would likely be what patients hear from their doctors already. "We really don't need any more tests to tell us we ought to lose weight, exercise, [and] eat a less pro-inflammatory diet," he says.
